A Day in the life of The Beatles

Yesterday, the Beatles arrived in the nation’s capital and their troubles suddenly seemed far away. After a good night’s rest, their morning begins at Barrio. The place to be seen on a Saturday in Canberra, where the latest music and art is dissected over coffee with the ‘it’ crowd.

After a sesh of sipping on long blacks and snacking on toasties, they continue meandering down the bustling streets of Braddon towards Haig Park, where their curiosity is piqued by a growing crowd. Delightedly, The Beatles discover the source of the commotion to be the Pop Inn and draw in some of the local lads to join them for a seat. Fans of a classic English pint, The Beatles decide to broaden their horizons and order a selection of the local Canberra Brewing Company beers to go around.

As the crowds grow, they decide it’s time to let it be and move on with a stroll through Braddon onto the city. Here, they discover Landspeed Records where the latest, and most underground records can be found. Jumping on the e-scooters across Commonwealth Bridge they cut a memorable vision of four young men crossing Abbey Road, to visit the National Portrait Gallery for the Icons Shakespeare to Winehouse exhibition. Here, The Beatles marvel at their portrait and can’t help but feel chuffed at the esteemed company of icons through the ages on display.

They look for other musical mates on the walls ‘Look, there’s Bowie!” It’s near closing time when they find themselves craving a slightly more London beat. Sideway beckons, and they head back to the city to unwind in the intimate bar with mates and listen to Canberra’s best decks.

As part of our ongoing partnership with the National Portrait Gallery we present “A view that an icon would love”, a series of Canberra itineraries crafted from the perspectives of the great icons featured in the exhibition ‘From Shakespeare to Winehouse: Icons from the National Portrait Gallery London’ The exhibition is now open!
